About the National Provider Identifier (NPI)
The NPI is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification Standard. All covered healthcare providers, healthcare clearinghouses, and health plans must use NPIs in their administrative and financial transactions.
NPIs are 10-digit numbers that don't carry information about the provider (such as state or specialty). There are two types of NPI numbers:
- Type 1: For individual providers (doctors, dentists, nurses, etc.)
- Type 2: For organizational providers (hospitals, clinics, group practices, etc.)
